Description

This tencel twill fabric is woven in Turkey and is Oeko-Tex certified. Tencel is made from wood pulp that’s harvested from tree farms that are sustainably managed and traceable. The tree farms have been established on land unsuitable for food crops or grazing. The fiber production itself is more eco-friendly than cotton production due to its closed-loop process. This means that up to 99% of the water and solvents used are recycled and reused. Production plant emissions are significantly lower in comparison to many other human-made fiber operations. The closed loop process process used to manufacture Lyocell fiber does not require bleach, which is commonly used in the production of other fabrics.

Our buttons are made of mother of pearl. The button factory uses renewable energy. The button maker, is certified by WCA (Workplace Conditions Assessment). Their mother of pearl buttons are Ecocrest certified and made of wild trochus pearls from Vietnam.

The Maker follows a slow fashion philosophy first and foremost. We value quality over quantity and do not follow the outdated seasons of the fashion industry. Instead, we introduce small capsule collections when there is demand and focus on lasting, timeless design, colour and materials. We do not remove items from our collections, because there is no such thing as out of date or out of season for us. Some of our designs may be reintroduced multiple times and stay in our roster for years. We only create things that serve a purpose and add something vital to an individual’s wardrobe. Our clothing is made well so it may last through time, and we give detailed care instructions so that you may care for it the best way possible. We never aim to churn out new designs relentlessly, but only introduce new styles when there is a space that needs to be fulfilled. We do this in the hopes of introducing our customers to a more conscious way of shopping. The Maker is not in a hurry to make clothes fast, but embraces the slow process of well made garments.

Care Instructions

Handwashing is the safest solution. It can also be machine washed in 30 degrees. Turn garment inside out before washing and make sure spin is on low. Tencel will shrink about 3% with the first washing.

We care about our waste! If the garment you have bought from us is no longer suitable for you and you can’t resell or hand it down, we will take the garment back. You can email us at info@themakerjournal.com and we will give you the address to which it can be sent along with a discount code for the bazaar.

If you love the garment, but it’s broken or stained and you do not know how to fix it yourself, we suggest taking it to a professional seamstress.

The Maker

The Tuula Dress is made at Ompelimo Oranssi Unelma, the workshop of dressmaker and seamstress Tuula Espo in Hamina, Finland. Tuula is an artisan and runs the workshop as a one-woman show. She graduated at the local artisan school and specialised in fashion. The Finnish textile industry has always specialised in knitted clothing and the first factories for knitwear were introduced in 1740. In 2008, only about 5,000 people worked in the textile manufacturing industry in Finland, compared to 35,000 in the 60s. It is important for us to support the textile industry to ensure the skills and know how survive.

The pattern is made by our in house patternmaker and wizard Laura Jasiunaite who is based in London.
