Description

The Sini trousers in black are made of hemp and organic cotton that is woven in Lancashire, UK on Jacquard looms and finished in Yorkshire. The fabric has a scour and calendar finish. The hemp is woven across certified organic cotton warp yarns from the EU. The hemp comes from Cornwall and Romania. The Cornish yarn was made from hemp grown in France by an international group of hemp activists and enthusiasts who are pioneers in the legal industrial hemp movement. For more refined fabrics, hemp yarns from Romania are used, where hemp is part of their agricultural tradition and low impact farming techniques.

All yarns are sourced from the UK and Europe, to provide a regional network of production where it is possible to oversee the entire process from seed to final creation. The hemp and cotton fabric naturally creases, softening over time. Natural fibres may give colour variations and give the fabric a flecked effect with slub and knot. These characteristics do not affect the durability.

Hemp needs little help to thrive; spreading so quickly, it makes a great companion crop. It helps clean the air and is grown with less water and without the need for harmful chemicals. The fibre is naturally UV resistant and absorbent, and is also known for its anti-bacterial, anti-mould and insulative qualities. For hemp production, harsh chemical herbicides aren’t necessary. Hemp also naturally reduces pests, so no pesticides are needed. It also returns 60-70% of the nutrients it takes from the soil. When you add processing into the equation, cotton uses around four times as much water as hemp. Hemp can produce over double the fibre yield per hectare than cotton.

Hemp grows super quickly, resulting in more yields per acre. The average tree takes about 10 years to grow to maturity, while hemp can take as little as 3 months to be ready to harvest. Industrial hemp plants absorb more carbon dioxide than trees. While it grows, it replenishes the soil with nitrogen and other nutrients, while removing toxic chemicals at the same time. (Fun fact: Hemp was intentionally grown at the radioactive Chernobyl site to remove toxins and pollutants from the soil). Nothing is wasted in producing hemp: seeds are used to make oil and food supplements, while the stalks are used for fiber.

The Maker

The Sini trousers are made by Sini in her own atelier in Hyvinkää, Finland. Sini begun her studies to become a clothing artisan in Savonlinna in the early 2000s. In 2018 she started her very own atelier, where she now makes made to order clothing.

The Finnish textile industry has always specialised in knitted clothing and the first factories for knitwear were introduced in 1740. In 2008, only about 5,000 people worked in the textile manufacturing industry in Finland, compared to 35,000 in the 60s. It is important for us to support the textile industry to ensure the skills and know how survive.
