The Cherry blossom silk top is made of Eri silk from Assam, India. Silk is biodegradable, renewable, antibacterial and flame retardant. The process of making eri silk is also known as ahimsa or non-violent, which is when the silk is processed without killing the silkworm. For around 30 days the silkworm grows and munches on castor leaves until it reaches its final size. It then starts to spin its cocoon, which takes another 15 days. Once the moth leaves its cocoon, the silk is processed. The fabric is very strong, durable and elastic. The silk is darker than heavier than other varieties of silk. It also has excellent thermal properties of keeping you warm when it’s cold and cold when it’s warm. The region in India where our eri silk comes from is so well known for its silk production that it was known as “the country of cocoon rearers”. The bulk of Eri Silk production gives Assam the name of Eri Silk state. In Assam, there are various techniques of hand-spinning used for the eri silk. The fly shuttle loom which is used in Assam is a bigger loom set up outside with a wooden frame and a plank on which the weaver sits. Often bamboo sticks are used for support.
