Kamalakshi Saikia is a slow textile designer from India based in Singapore. She works out of her studio creating designs on natural fibres. Under her label, Kopou, she creates fabrics using various surface design techniques. Intrinsic to her textile design is the use of blocks which she creates herself using a variety of recycled materials. The result is a one of a kind piece, uniquely crafted using different blocks which are sometimes layered with shibori, screen prints or hand painting techniques.
Continuous experimentation and play with colours, techniques and motifs characterize her work which is created on Khadi, Eri silk or linen textiles. Kamalakshi gets joy from playing with colour and form without being bound by too much structure, using textiles which she gets from India. Her garments combine her love of colour, especially earthy tones, and the joys of experimenting with the watercolour technique, gently coaxing colour and water to form the end result.
